I just finished reading The Hot Shoe Diaries: Big Light from Small Flashes by Joe McNally. What a fantastic collection of lighting scenarios and solutions used by a very talented photographer and strobist. I could easily see his book being used as supplemental material in a college lighting course, i.e. this is how light works, this is how you calculate fall off, this is ths angle of incidence and reflection, this is your new friend the photon, and by the way, this is how you can sculpt with this medium.
The premise – beautiful photos and how Joe and team lit them. With each photo, you are given a behind the scenes look at Joe's thought process and in some cases an even deeper look into what Mr. McNally calls his mental Rolodex of lighting solutions.
Do yourself a favor and buy the book!
Now I am on to Sketching Light which I hope is as good if not better!
School update: Working on Unit 4 at NYIP and still need to complete my Unit 3 photo assignments. So much to learn and do.
